10 reasons to get a humidifier

Dry air is mostly indoors when the outside temperature drops and the central heating is turned on. You can try to increase the humidity of the air by ventilating the premises or placing dishes with water. But these are measures with a short-term effect. Ventilating the room has the opposite effect, as cold air generally cannot absorb as much moisture as warm air. When you ventilate the premises in winter, the cold air is more difficult to moisten, and when it warms up, the relative humidity drops. As a result, when it's cold outside, indoor humidity drops well below 40%.

1. To stay healthy

During the colder months we have to put up with dry mucous membranes, sore throats, coughs and dry – or in extreme cases even bleeding – noses. Our mucous membranes need a certain level of moisture to prevent them from becoming inflamed. When sufficiently moisturized, our mucous membranes act as a barrier to pathogens. For this reason, dry air must be enriched with steam in order to raise the humidity to a healthy value. If the humidity level is not high enough, it puts a strain on our entire immune system and makes us sick. In addition, flu viruses are able to survive longer in dry air than in rooms with an ideal indoor climate, thus increasing your chances of getting sick.

2. Restful sleep

If the indoor climate is not humid enough, it can cause restless sleep. An excessively low humidity level below 40% will put our bodies under more stress than a good humidity value of around 50%. If the air is optimally saturated, our bodies are able to relax. Babies and young children react particularly sensitively to an unbalanced, excessively dry indoor climate. This can be remedied by using a humidifier to increase the humidity in the room and thus for better sleep. In the case of colds and flu, the optimal level of humidity can improve symptoms such as stuffy nose and cough so you can sleep better.

3. Breathe freely

Most allergy sufferers notice the presence of pollen and dust particles in the air, especially in late winter and spring when temperatures rise again. Insufficiently humidified indoor air greatly promotes the dispersal of small particles. By humidifying the air, these suspended particles bind together better, making them heavy so they fall to the ground. This prevents these small particles from being dispersed and there are fewer irritations.

4. Less snoring

We all need enough sleep to be healthy. However, if your partner or neighbor snores, it can significantly disrupt your sleep. In particular, a person's snoring can become even worse if they have a cold, which causes their nose and throat to become blocked - making it harder to breathe. Using a humidifier to ensure that there is sufficient humidity in the room can help clear the airways and provide a permanent solution to the snoring problem.

5. You see more clearly

Itchy, burning or sticky eyes in winter are a sign of excessively low humidity. If the surface of the eye becomes too dry, it can be very uncomfortable. In the long term, insufficient humidity can lead to permanent eye damage and vision impairment. An indoor air humidifier provides a quick and effective solution to this problem. If we increase the water vapor saturation in the air, we can blink again without problems and generally feel better. In particular, contact lens wearers can benefit from well-humidified indoor air, because when there is optimal humidity, contact lenses no longer stick to the eye and eye irritation is reduced.

6. Softer and more elastic skin

Our skin needs a stable level of moisture. In addition to suitable cosmetic products, a healthy indoor climate is essential to keep the skin firm and healthy. If we spend long periods of time in an environment where the indoor climate is bad, our skin will not be supplied with the necessary moisture and as a result it will become dry.

7. Thriving indoor plants

Soil is extremely efficient at storing water. If the indoor relative humidity is too low, the air will also take the necessary moisture from the soil in which houseplants are planted. This process takes much-needed water from the plants, which can quickly dry out as a result. Using a humidifier to increase relative humidity can benefit not only our heal. 8. Mild indoor climate for wooden furniture, parquet and valuable paintings
If the humidity is too low, the moisture will be drawn primarily from hard materials and objects such as furniture, walls and flooring. As a result, wooden furniture and furnishings will become cracked and brittle over time. Damage can also be caused to paintings and other wooden objects if there is an insufficient level of humidity in the room. This can be countered by a good indoor climate with an appropriate level of humidity. For example, wood flooring retailers recommend a certain humidity (between a minimum of 40% and a maximum of 60% relative humidity) at the time of sale, as otherwise the quality of the flooring cannot be guaranteed.

9. Harmonious sounding musical instruments

Just like wooden furniture and parquet floors, wooden musical instruments such as pianos, guitars and violins are extremely sensitive to fluctuations in indoor humidity. A humidifier with a built-in hygrostat can help prevent tools from falling out. Fluctuations in the indoor climate are compensated by the humidifier, so the wood retains its shape and the instrument remains perfectly tuned.

10. No static electricity

If there is sufficient humidity in the air, less static electricity can occur due to the water in the indoor air, ie. the higher the humidity, the lower the static build-up will be. By increasing the humidity level and creating a better indoor climate, static-charged hair and clothes, as well as unpleasant shocks from static electricity between people and metal objects, become a thing of the past.th, but also that of our plants.
